Getting ready to move out myself, I can only imagine how my parents (and other parents) feel. We are in the same household for 18 years, a significant portion of our life, only to suddenly leave- hopefully for better and brighter things.
With piece 6, I wanted to depict the "leaving the nest" scenario: a father helping his child move in/out of their college dorm, carrying a cardboard moving box topped with a childhood stuffed animal. I knew, going in, that much of the work would be blank. A college dorm room is only so full, typically containing minimal wooden furniture and bare walls. With half the drawing likely to be somewhat colorless, I knew the other half had to be loaded with details/texture. I tried my best to implant a variety of tones and values within areas like the moose's fur and the cardboard box. I chose a vibrant color (bright, royal blue) for the father's shirt, to add a pop of color to an otherwise dull-ish composition. |
